The Atlas Model Railroad Company, Inc. started out as the Atlas Tool Company in 1924 by Stephan Schaffan Sr. a Czechoslovakian immigrant. Stephan began his tool company in Newark, New Jersey and by 1933 had his 16 year old son, Stephan Schaffan Jr. working for him. Stephan Jr. was a graduate of the Essex County Vocational School and an avid model airplane builder.
Stephan, who hung around the local hobby shop, soon began tinkering with model train track trying to improve upon it as a way to make extra money for his plane hobby. In the days when train modeling was a do it yourself affair, Stephan's 'Switch Kits' , stapled track to fiber, the first practical rail joiner, pre-assembled turnouts and flexible track soon forced Atlas out of the basement and into their first factory in 1947.
Today Atlas not only makes model train track and accessories, but a wide range of other products as well. With the creation of Super-flex, Snap-Switches, Custom-Line Turnouts and more
